My sons Luke (9 years) and Charles (6 years) have expressed a willingness to try to build a small plastic where you can maneuver carts and some fun.
After careful discussion and planning with them after reading some articles on the design of the models we decided to build a "switching layout" set in America and managed by the Chicago & North Western Railroad which is now merged into giant Union Pacific.

The operating diorama is about the size of 1.20 x 0.35 meters and is built from a base of plywood with reinforcements lower.
We built the base with the polipan (high-density polystyrene) on which we have so far supported the tracks and fix them with pins to check the position and shape.
The tracks are flexible Atlas cod. 55 and the exchanges are always Atlas cod. 55 # 5 '.
Here are some photos of the work.
